CBL Full Color Balance Control: Optimal color image without treatment
While digital cameras are running around for the leading image creators, the principles for light metering and color balance is still back in film technology.
It claimed at least Korean CBL, who has launched a tool which provides optimal white balance, color and tone reproduction. That takes digital recording technology seriously, it is argued. Fotografi magazin has tried CBL lens with Full Color Balance Control some hours, and is fascinated by the Korean invention.
The product looks almost like a mirror, and hang in a renyard you may have around your neck. Where the mirror should be, is an intricate set of Prism behind a clear surface, which together reflects an ideal distribution of colors, if we are to believe the manufacturer.
We admit that it was with a little skepticism, we took the product in more detail, even if the packaging is sterling enough for a mass produced product of plastic: In addition to a thorough manual with a number of examples (many of them persuasive), the technical background material and the CBL lens, you get a soft little bag to protect the product, and everything comes in a sturdy cardboard box.
Full Color Balance in use
Color Balance Lens
The principle is based on using the Prism surface to measure manual white balance in the same light you are shooting in. The value of the product is and falls on whether it gives an advantage over manual white balance measured by other means, like a white sheet or a piece intended also white or gray motifs. CBL Full Color Balance comes in three editions that have different sizes. We've only tried the largest of them.
If you are precise to measure the white balance without reflections in the same li ght as the subject shooting, this product gives in most cases very clear improvements in relation to other ways to measure the manual white balance on. One can thus say well it does what it promises. Especially in mixed lightning the impact is clear. But you keep little or nothing of the natural color tone different lighting conditions give, it is to neutralize the colors you use the device. We also found that in some cases colors are little warmer than we would preferred. If your time is money, this is a good buy.
